Distractions & Words (A teacher's post)
(I recently picked up a second job at a tutoring center in Santa Ana. I needed to get back to my roots of helping people. Today was my first day, and it was rather interesting. Each tutor is assigned a student to oversee for thirty minute sessions.  In addition to the assigned student, the learning center is filled with countless other kids wanting to finish homework, a nice place to sit, play on...

Moments with my relatives from China #1
No Chinese Word For Dentist My parents and I were sitting at the dinner table when my uncle walked into the room. Parents : Come sit down and eat dinner. Uncle: I cant eat tonight.  My tooth hurts.  Do you guys have medicine? Parents: Take some Tylenol. It will make you feel better. Me: Why does your tooth hurt? Can I see?  My uncle shows me his tooth, and it obviously appears to be in...

Quiver to Life
I was at work today, and I stumbled upon this wonderful quote from Helen Keller. “I left the well-house eager to learn.  Everything had a name, and each name gave birth to a new thought.  As we returned to the house, every object I touched seemed to quiver with life.”

Mr. Ta, the kindergarten teacher
It was an unforgettable experience. Before teaching Kindergarten, I was assigned 3rd/4th graders.  They gave me hell.  Every day was a battle, and every day I lost.  There were times throughout the week where I found myself sitting in my car, questioning my goals and whether or not I was any good for these kids.  I yelled more than I taught.  I frowned more than I smiled.  I was disappointed in...

I recently found a hobby that allows me to exercise my creative side.  Using construction paper, I am creating cards.  For now, I will be basing my cards off of established characters.  In the future, I will start making completely original cards. Tell me what you guys think!  http://roarsandwhispers.tumblr.com/

we are strangers
People are strange and estranged. Its weird how we can recall hundreds of people we know off the top of our heads and then add another batch by scrolling through our phone books and friend lists, yet there are only a handful of people we can legitimately say we know.  The word know gets tossed around far too often that it’s meaning has been diluted. There’s a big difference from...

a good heart
I learned from a young age that I would never be fastest or smartest or the most handsome. There are limitations that you just cant control.  If I could be taller, I would. If I could have better memory, I would. If I could, I would, but you cant. Things dont work like that. However, I always found that there was one aspect of my life I could control.  I could have a big heart.  You do not have...

To be fearless is impossible and naive. I would much rather fear less than be fearless.  This way I can still enjoy the uncertainty of my impulses and the change.  Being afraid is half of being alive.

thoughts on teaching
I don’t understand how teachers do it.   This Summer, I was given the privilege of teaching a group of kids, varying from wee fourth graders to tweens to hormone enraged freshmen, the basics of grammar and English.  It was an 8-week program that allowed me to dip my toes into the field of education.  I wanted to dip my toes, however, I somehow found myself splashing, knee-deep.  From this...

When isn’t the world in peril? When a person really opens their eyes, they see that humanity is always in chaos, that we are always on the brim of an apocalyptic tomorrow.  Today…there’s war in the middle east, revolutions in Egypt, Libya, Bahrain…, Totalitarianism in North Korea, famine, poverty, racism, genocide, the Earthquake in Japan…and did we forget about...

what a waste
I have let my laziness get the better of me. Most of the time I am indifferent and dont care about my work. I am a ghost in my classes.   However, when I try…I realize my true intelligence.  I find out that I am quite insightful and analytical. I can write and interpret what I read with the best of them. I am smart sometimes. It is so frustrating to know how much I messed up.  For awhile...
